Samir Nurkovic’s first season at Kaizer Chiefs was arguably one of the greatest seasons for the Serbian footballer.
Not only is he performing at the best of his ability, but he is also a prototype for the modern striker.
The Amakhosi goal poacher has been an influential figure for the Soweto giants following his return from an injury. The 28-year-old has been entrusted with a very hard task to lead the team in the absence of their skipper Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
With the Soweto derby clash fast approaching, Nurkovic is looking forward to replicating last season’s fine form and help Chiefs to continue with their five-match unbeaten run in the top-flight.
The Glamour Boys will lock horns with their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in a DStv Premiership on Saturday at Orlando Stadium with the kick-off scheduled for 15:30 in the afternoon.
“Playing in big derbies like the Soweto derby is every player’s dream. I have had the privilege to play three derbies last season and I am happy to be part of this derby again,” says the Amakhosi marksman.
“Before I arrived in South Africa and came to Chiefs, I learnt about the Soweto derby. The fact that the players have the opportunity to play in front of 90 000 supporters made me really look forward to being part of such an occasion.”
The Chiefs hitman has contributed one goal and two assists in five league outings this season.
“It is unfortunate that this derby will have no supporters at the same stadium, but I am sure they will be supporting us from home, playing without supporters is very different. They are always the 12th man and give us extra motivation. We really miss them at the stadium,” he adds.
However, Gavin Hunt’s troops aim to walk away with bragging rights and move up of the log standings.
“It is full focus for Chiefs as we get ready for the clash with Pirates. A big team like Kaizer Chiefs must only be interested in victories, that’s why we are going into this game just like every other game with full focus,” he explains.
Nurkovic has not scored a goal against the Buccaneers and will be hoping to end his barren run this weekend.
