It was on this day a year ago when Banyana Banyana made their first ever World Cup appearance.
The Desiree Ellis coached side qualified for the Women’s world showpiece after finishing as runners-up at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Ghana.
They went on to be drawn in Group B against Spain, China and Germany.
It took a magical moment from 2018 CAF Women’s Footballer of the Year Thembi Kgatlana to register the first ever goal by the side at a World Cup during the 3-1 defeat by Spain in the opening match.
It remains the only goal scored by the squad at the tournament while conceding 8.
South Africa went on to finish bottom of the Group after defeats by China and Germany in their other two matches.
Banyana also became the first African side to score first against European opposition at a Women’s World Cup since 1995.
