Four 4 years ago today, Stephen Keshi died at the age of 54 in Benin City in southern Nigeria from “cardiac arrest”.
As a player, Keshi represented Nigeria 64 times winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994.
His 20-year playing career included stints in Belgium, France, the United States and finally in Malaysia, with Perlis FA.
Nicknamed the “Big Boss” for his leadership skills, Keshi was part of the Super Eagles team that made the second round of USA ’94 before losing to eventual finalists, Italy in the Round of 16.
He then went on to coach the Super Eagles and guided them to the Afcon title in 2013.
The ‘Big Boss’ is one of just two people to win the Afcon both as a player and coach, alongside Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Hogary.
