On this day in 2016, Baroka goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke made history after his overhead goal during a League match against Orlando Pirates at the Peter Mokaba Stadium went on to be nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award.

He became the first African to be nominated into the top three of the prestigious Puskas Award.

Some of the world stars who were vouching for the Giyani-born keeper included Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane.

“I like Olivier Giroud’s goal, but I have to give credit to the goalkeeper (Oscarine Masuluke). He never goes forward and he tried an amazing goal, too,” said Ronaldo during the FIFA awards gala in 2017.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane said: “It had to be the goalkeeper, with the bicycle kick. Incredible goal and celebration as well.”

Masuluke finished second in the voting, with Olivier Giroud elected the winner and Deyna Castellanos taking third.

He received 27.48% of the 792 062 votes, while Giroud amassed 36.17%.
