Five years ago on April 21, South Africa lost one of its football icons, John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu.

Moshoeu, who played 73 games for Bafana Bafana and scored 8 goals, died after a long battle with cancer.

He was 49 at the time of his death.

Born in Ga-Mashashane in Limpopo and grew up in Gauteng, Moshoeu went on to play well into his 40s.

Before moving to play in Turkey, he had featured for Giant Blackpool and Kaizer Chiefs in the early 90s and upon his return in 2003, he had a second stint at Chiefs, before playing for AmaZulu.

On the international front, Moshoeu won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana, playing a pivotal role, including scoring a brace against Ghana in the semifinals.
