Asisat Oshoala was on target as FC Barcelona thumped Arsenal in the Women’s Uefa Champions League on Tuesday night.
Arsenal lost for the first time since February as Barcelona’s Asisat Oshoala haunted her old club in their Group C opener.
Spanish attacker Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring after an Oshoala shot rebounded towards her and she made no mistake from close range, 1-0.
The Nigerian star then got herself an assist after running down the right wing and squaring it for Alexia Putellas to slot home. She later added the third herself after getting at the end of a sublime Mariona through ball.
Norwegian midfielder Frida Maanum bundled in a consolation for the visitors before Lieke Martens chipped in the fourth for the current holders who took maximum points on match day one.
Putellas could have added another one deep into stoppage time, but her penalty was saved by goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.
Oshoala, 26, played for Arsenal from March 2016 to February 2017, helping them win the FA Cup, and she did not celebrate her goal at the Johan Cruyff Stadium and showed respect to her former club.
Jonas Eidevall’s Gunners were one of the on-form teams in Europe coming into the game, with eight wins from eight games in all competitions this season, scoring at least three goals in each match.
They were unbeaten in 20 games in all competitions, going back to February, but unfortunately for them, Barcelona had also won all their matches this season having managed to get five victories in the league so far.
Next up in the Champions League, the Gunners host German side Hoffenheim on the 14th of October while Barcelona travel to Denmark to face HB Koge.
Hoffenheim beat Koge 5-0 in Tuesday’s other Group C game.
