Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is in hot water with his club Napoli, this is after videos of him at a party while in Nigeria emerged on social media.
The striker was in Lagos for a short Christmas holiday and had a surprise party to celebrate his 22nd birthday with friends and family.
Upon his return to Naples last week the club conducted regular Covid19 tests and Osimhen’s results returned positive.
The emergence of the videos has left most of the club’s top management furious at the attacker, but manager Gennaro Gattuso has surprisingly reacted with calm calling it a ‘silly mistake’.
Speaking to Footballitalia.net, the Italian coach denied reports that the striker has been fined, but insisted that the 22-year-old has to pay for the mistake.
“He has already apologised, he’s a lad who gives his all when working. He made a silly mistake; he knows that,” a calm Gattuso explained.
“I am a coach, I don’t decide fines, especially as I was the one who gave the all-clear for him to return to Nigeria and so both of us were left embarrassed by what happened,” he added.
For Osimhen, the incident has drawn criticism from every corner of Naples, including fans and the media.
He wrote a statement on Instagram apologizing for his actions after realizing the seriousness of the matter.
“I am sorry for what happened. I made a mistake going to Nigeria right now. I made a mistake going to a surprise party without understanding the gravity of what I was doing. I apologise to the club, the coach, the team and the fans,” read the statement.
The Nigerian is now self-isolating at home and missed Sunday’s 4-1 victory against Cagliari in Serie A. The attacker could also miss league games against Udinese Calcio, Spezia and an Italian Cup game against Empoli.
Much is expected from him after his high-profile switch from LOSC Lille, but after a bright start, the striker has been side-lined since early November 2021 with a shoulder injury he sustained while on international duty with the ‘Super Eagles’.
