Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has turned the corner in Italy.
The 22-year-old has hit the ground running with Napoli since putting his injury woes behind him. His recent strike came on Sunday as Genaro Gattuso’s side defeated Sampdoria 2-0 away from home.
This was a second consecutive weekend that he was on target for the Neapolitans who temporarily moved into the top four following the win at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, but Atalanta’s 3-2 victory against Fiorentina pushed them back to fifth.
When he arrived in Italy, Osimhen struggled to hit form.
To make matters worse, the striker was hit by a couple of injuries which kept him out of action for several months. The first injury came towards the end of 2020 when he dislocated his shoulder while on national team duty with the Super Eagles.
At the beginning of the year, the forward had a bad head injury, but since recovering he has been lethal in front of goal for Napoli. Gattuso’s side is chasing a top four finish which will secure them a spot in next season’s Uefa Champions League.
Before the victory against Sampdoria, Osimhen had won a penalty which was eventually converted by Lorenzo Insigne, but Napoli lost 2-1 against Juventus. A week before that, he netted as they defeated Crotone 4-3.
After scoring on Sunday, the former LOSC Lille attacker has taken his goal tally to five for the 2020/21 campaign.
He also played a vital role for the Nigeria national team who recently qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be played in Cameroon next year. Osimhen scored a goal as the Super Eagles defeated Lesotho 3-0 in their last qualifier in Lagos.
Napoli host Inter Milan on Sunday evening and Osimhen will be eager to continue playing a crucial role up front for the club.
