Juventus head coach Andrea Pirlo is well aware of the importance of keeping Cristiano Ronaldo fresh and fit as the Portuguese star reaches the latter stages of his career.
Pirlo enjoyed a perfect debut as a first-team coach as Juventus comfortably beat Sampdoria 3-0 on Sunday evening at Allianz Stadium.
Ronaldo, who doesn’t like to be on the bench recently picked up a toe injury on international duty and Pirlo is keen to closely manage his star player’s fitness.
“We are thinking about [how to use Ronaldo] and talked it over,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.
“He’s not tired yet, as we just started, but when we come up to less important games, we’ll try to give him a rest.”
The 35-year-old Ronaldo scored the third goal in Juventus’ Serie A opening match with new signing Dejan Kulusevski netting on his debut in the first half before Leonardo Bonucci rounded out the victory in the second half.
“He’s a very intelligent guy who knows his body very well, so he is aware of when it’s time to rest or to step it up. When he will play depends on him,” concluded the 2006 FIFA World Cup winner.
Since his €117 million move from Real Madrid in July 2018, Ronaldo has found the back of the net 66 times and provided 19 assists in 90 games for the Bionconeri in all competitions.
