Al Ahly dominated their clash against Smouha to earn valuable three points in their title-defending journey in the 26th round fixture of the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday.

The first half of the game started fast with the Reds possessing the ball and the Blues relying on the counter-attacks. The first real opportunity fell to Taher Mohamed, who was denied from close range by El-Hany Soliman.

Al Ahly kept their pressure and Hussein El-Shahat missed another glorious opportunity after skillfully putting Soliman on the ground, but his strike went wide. Five minutes later, Sherif rose up high to meet Maaloul’s cross with a powerful header; however, the ball hit the crossbar.

The Reds refused to end the first half without scoring as Hussein El-Shahat came close to scoring the goal of the season, but his overhead kick was ruled out for offside.

With five minutes left on half-time, Mohamed Sherif managed finally to break the deadlock after he was sent through on goal following a beautiful link-up play with Taher Mohamed.

One minute was what Mosimane’s men needed to double their lead after Maaloul sent an inch-perfect cross, which was met by El-Shahat, whose first-touch strike found the net.

The goals kept on coming as a minute later Mahmoud El-Badry brought El-Shahat down in the penalty area to gift the Cairo giants a penalty, which was executed by Ali Maaloul, who widened the gap further by making it 3-0.

The second half witnessed more chances for Al Ahly as they kept ball possession, which was reflected in the 58th minute when Sherif tapped in Ali Maaloul’s cross to make it 4-0.

Ten minutes before the end of the game, substitute Kahraba almost added a fifth goal but his shot went straight between El-Hany Soliman’s hands.

The win moved Al Ahly to second place on the Egyptian Premier League table with 45 points from 21 games nearing the gap between them and Zamalek, who sit top with 61 points from 27 games.

Al Ahly have six games in hand.

On the other hand, despite their defeat, Smouha keep their place in fourth place with 40 points from 28 games.

The next game for the title-holders will be against Arab Contractors on the 8th of July where they will be aiming for another win to enhance their chances of retaining the league title.
