Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is convinced their nemesis Kaizer Chiefs are the favourites for the 2019/20 Absa Premiership title.
“Jingles” was speaking following their 2-1 away win over Black Leopards at the Thohoyandou stadium on Wednesday night.
The narrow win placed Masandawana five points behind the log leaders Amakhosi, but the Pretoria-based side have two games in hand.
Mosimane feels it is always expected that a club of Chiefs’ magnitude that is only competing for domestic competitions would have an upper hand over teams that have CAF commitments, like Sundowns.
“Kaizer Chiefs are doing very well; they are doing their business quietly and getting on top. They fight a lot but it’s normal and expected,” said Mosimane.
“When you don’t have [to play in the] top 8, you don’t have CAF (Champions League) and you have a big team like Chiefs you have pride and integrity for the badge so it’s a normal reaction to come out like that. I mean how far low can they go. They have had it and they are coming back and they are strong.
“I call them a well rested team, they should be able to compete because they play Saturday, the next Saturday and the next Saturday so they’ve got the energy, they have time to fix their problems at training but we have to play every three days,” he said.
“They are the favorites for me (for the title), that’s what I said about (Bidvest) Wits last year because they didn’t have anything to do and for me, they were the favourites. Kaizer Chiefs are now the favorites.”
The Brazilians have now played six Absa Premiership matches; won four and drawn two.
They remain the only club yet to lose a League match this season.
