Player discovery: introducing David Katlego Letlhogonolo Hansen

Another South African youngster is making progress in a big European club.

The name David Katlego Letlhogonolo Hansen might not be popular in Mzansi’s football corridors, but in a few years to come, it might be on everyone’s lips as the youngster harnesses his skills with Danish giants FC Copenhagen.

Born in Pretoria in 2007, the youngster left his native country six months after his birth to live in Denmark with his parents. When he was seven years old, his football journey started with Copenhagen-based lower division side, Boldklubben 1903.

Hansen spent four years with Boldklubben before being scouted by Copenhagen who immediately recruited him to join their esteemed academy in 2018. He currently turns out for the club’s U17 development squad.

“I was born in South Africa, but left at a very young age to move to Denmark with my adopted parents. I started playing football when I was just seven at a small local club before being scouted by FCK who brought me over in 2018.

“I’m 14 years old and I can play several positions in the frontline. I can play as a striker, a winger as well as in the attacking midfield role.

“After all is said and done my goal is to become the best in the world.”

South African legend Sibusiso Zuma is one of the most celebrated players in the history of Copenhagen and the youngster is also aware of what ‘Rhee’ achieved with the striker’s statue still standing outside the Copenhagen Stadium.

“Yes yes I’m aware of what he achieved at FCK, we all know him here. I want to be like him or even better.”

Hansen joins a list of promising youngsters who are going through different academies in Europe. 13-year-old striker Riley Swarts is in the books of Belgian giants KRC Genk while 14-year-old attacking midfielder Daniel Jordan is with the esteemed Ajax Amsterdam academy in the Netherlands.

Winger Theodor Beck recently joined newly promoted Danish club Silkeborg while highly-rated striker Reyaan Raffie is with Manchester City in England.
