Player of the Weekend: Luther Singh

Luther Singh continued his form for Pacos Ferreira in Portugal.

The Stars of Africa graduate played 80 minutes and netted a brace to help the club romp to a 2-1 victory against CD Nacional on Friday night.

Singh opened the scoring after 15 minutes. He scored a beautiful volley into the far corner after an attempted clearance took the ball in his path and the Bafana Bafana winger finished with aplomb to give Ferreira a deserved lead.

With 33 minutes gone, another corner was cleared into Singh’s path and he smashed home into the far post yet again, but this time it was a low driven shot which gave the goalkeeper no chance.

Bryan Rochez pulled one back for the visitors in additional time, but it wasn’t enough to stage a come back as the home side took all three points to move to 41 points from 22 games – just a point behind fourth-placed SL Benfica.

Singh has netted four goals and assisted another four strikes so far this season. He is the only player in the entire team that has played all his club’s league games this season with coach Pepa building the team around him.

Ferreira is on course to qualify for the Uefa Europa League for the first since 2007. They have also qualified for the Uefa Champions League back in the 2013/14 season.

On Sunday evening, they have a tricky trip to FC Porto away from home as they look to continue causing upsets in the league.

Pepa will be relying on Singh, Douglass Tanque, Joao Pedro and Helder Ferreira to continue scoring goals for this season’s surprise package.

It’s been a good week for the attacker who has also been called up to the national team for the upcoming Afcon 2021 qualifiers by coach Molefi Ntseki. South Africa will host Ghana on the 25th of March before facing Sudan away three days later.
