The English U18 League got back to action this past weekend and Siyabonga Ligendza netted his 8th goal of the season for Cardiff City.
The forward was named in the starting line up as the young Blue Birds traveled to a tricky Watford. In the first encounter of the season, Watford walked away with all three points after a seven-goal thriller that ended with a 4-3 score line.
Ligendza played the entire 90 minutes and found the back of the net just 11 minutes into the game. After a month without action, the striker will be happy to start the new year on a high.
The 17-year-old has made a lot of progress since joining the Blue Birds as an U8 player nine years ago. In the past two and a half seasons, the teenager has scored 38 league goals for the club’s development teams.
He burst into the scene when he scored 24 league goals for the U16 back in the 2018/19 season which got him promoted to the U18 and U23 squads.
South Africa has seen a rise of teenagers signing for clubs across Europe with the likes of Kgaogelo Chauke (Southampton), Boipelo Mashigo (Unterhaching), Andras Nemeth (KRC Genk), Bradley Cross (Newcastle United), Rowan Human (Beitar Tel Aviv), Max McMillan (Leeds United) and Akiel Raffie (Fleetwood Town).
In 15 league appearances for the Welsh club, the striker has scored eight goals and assisted another four goals in the league.
On Saturday, Cardiff host Queens Park Rangers in their second league game of the year and the teenager will be hoping to continue playing a big part in their push to win the 2020/21 U18 league.
Ligendza is pushing to earn his first professional contract at the club and it will be monumental if he signs it exactly after a decade of being with them.
