If there was a true story of consistency and resilience Thembi Kgatlana’s story has to be up there.
Everywhere the 24-year-old has gone she has fought her way into any coach’s plans through fighting for every ball in the field of play. She is continuing with the same mentality at her new club Eibar in the Spanish Primera Division.
Kgatlana arrived at Eibar after leaving Portuguese top flight side Benfica and after three substitute appearances, she got her first league start on Saturday afternoon and repaid the coach’s faith with a goal that won the game against Espanyol. The Banyana Banyana star has played four league games, but she already has two goals registered to her name in those few appearances.
On Saturday, she was unfortunately forced off after 35 minutes due to an injury, but the club managed to hold on until the final whistle to secure all three points. Coach Jon Gallego was interviewed by Spanish media after the game and he had nothing, but praise for the attacker saying she has come in and added some value.
“Thembi has come in and done well for us, even when she used to play as a substitute, she showed a lot of good glimpses up front. We decided to give her a first start and she won us the game although she had to leave the field – we wish her a speedy recovery,” said Gallego.
The extent of the injury is still unknown, but Eibar’s technical team and the coach will be hoping that the striker is back in time to face Atletico Madrid on Thursday in the league. Eibar sit 6th on the log after their win against Espanyol and another victory against Madrid could see them enter the top five for the first time this season.
