Player of the weekend: Thibang Phete

Thibang Phete has continued to have a good 2020 with yet another good performance for Belenenses.

‘Cafu’ played another 90 minutes at the heart of the defence with Belenenses winning 1-0 against Vitoria Guimaraes on match day one of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

This was Phete’s 5th Man Of The Match award in 2020 after dominating the division since his arrival from Famalicao in January.

The centre back was also rewarded with a two-year-deal in February after his good performances with the Lisbon-based side.

Belenenses take on Famalicao next Monday and they will look to the 26-year-old to provide the last line of defence.

Here is Phete’s Man Of The Match performance in numbers :

Minutes: 90

Clearances made: 6

Interceptions made: 1

Shots blocked: 1

Fouled: 2 times

Aerial duels won: 2

Goals scored: 1

Long balls: 1

Pass accuracy: 90.9%

Number of passes made: 33

The Stars of Africa graduate was the undisputed Man of the Match on the day with Belenenses kicking off their 2020/21 season on a high.

The gamble to convert the Kimberley-born defender to the heart of defence has definitely paid off. Phete can play in any position at the back while he can play in the defensive midfield role.

The 26-year-old has been in Portugal for the past 6 years and still has much more to offer.
