A stunning 58th minute free kick by Yusuf Jappie gave Maritzburg United a hard fought 1-0 win over struggling Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Rise and Shine came into the match having lost their 7 previous matches and have now stretched the losing streak to 8 Absa Premiership matches and 9 in all competitions.
Polokwane City interim coach Bernard Molekwa had blamed the inability to convert their scoring chances for the loss.
“We gave away the points in terms of making mistakes where we are not supposed to. We started the game very well and we were in control of the match the whole first half they couldn’t even have a chance in in front of goals or a shot at goal,” stated Molekwa.
“We had 3 or 4 scoring chances and we were playing more in their game putting them under pressure but unfortunately we couldn’t get a goal,” said Molekwa.
Meanwhile, Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler feels they snatched 3 vital points against a difficult side.
“Yeah a very vital 3 points you know, it was never going to be easy coming to Polokwane because they are a very good team and they had a good season last season but obviously they have been going through a bad run but they have hired a new coach and having experienced it myself the players lift themselves when a new coach comes in and they want to show to the new coach what their abilities are and hopefully they will start having a good run”
Rise and Shine remain 3rd from bottom with 13 points from 14 matches while the Team of Choice are in position 8 with 17 points from 13 games.
