Pretoria Callies chairman Moses Malada has made his intentions clear that his club will be vying for automatic promotion come the 2021/22 GladAfrica Championship season.
The ‘Romans’ are in their second season in the first division following their promotion from the ABC Motsepe League in 2020.
Callies have been one of the busiest clubs in the market with the acquisition of experienced campaigners such as Collins Mbesuma, Edward Manqele, Lesvin Stoffels and Edmore Chirambadare.
Augustine Mahlonoko (Baroka) and Siyanda Nyanga (Mamelodi Sundowns) have also joined on season-long loans.
The club finished on position eight last season, eight points within a promotion play-off spot and 13 points behind eventual winners Sekhukhune United.
Speaking to FARPost during the club’s tour to Limpopo, Malada said they now know what it means to be in the first division but their ambitions are now to find themselves in the Premiership next season.
“We indicated last season that we wanted to be in the division (GladAfrica Championship), learn how things are done here because remember we had just been promoted from the ABC Motsepe League, which was not an easy journey,” said Malada.
“But for this season we are really looking forward to competing for the league. That’s why you can see that we are trying to assemble a good team, that will definitely be able to compete.
“We are looking at the young boys we have in the team and we trying to mix with the experienced players that are in the team. So, we are definitely looking for promotion this season,” he said.
Malada also explained why the club deemed it fit to bring players such as Mbesuma, Stoffels and Manqele.
“Manqele, Mbesuma and Stoffels are in our camp, and they are looking very good. These are very seasoned players who have travelled. We have brought them in to bring stability and experience, but yet we still have youngsters that are as good as them. It was just a matter of bringing in experience,” he added.
Callies have retained the services of 2017/18 first division winning coach, Joel Masutha who joined the club towards the end of last season.
