Premier Soccer League Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza addressed the Media on Monday afternoon to give an update regarding the resumption of the 2019/20 season.

Although there was no clear confirmation on the exact date of resumption, Khoza confirmed amongst other things that Gauteng has been earmarked as the Biologically Safe Environment (BSE) to resume the league and that 6 weeks will be requited to complete the whole programme.

“We have put saving lives first, in fact our whole approach is governed by this whole all important factor. It is even more important to the football business as sports requires stringent and physical exhaustion right from the beginning,” said Khoza during the briefing which took place at the PSL offices.

Khoza also addressed what he called narratives or confusion going around regarding the date of resumption.

“I must indicate that I had a few meetings with the President of SAFA (Dr Danny Jordaan) dealing with these issues long before this controversy came about, discussing a lot of issues affecting football in this ‘new normal’.

“The 6 weeks required to end the season is not a thumbsuck, setting of days and fixtures is done by the NSL in line with the NSL handbook that is recognised by the SAFA Statutes. Presently as we are speaking now there is a meeting that is taking place between the SAFA and PSL compliance officers finalising amongst other things, the availability of the match officials,” said Khoza.

“Some clubs have decried the limitedness of time to regain full fitness, we are in a state of war. In recognition of this FIFA issued a directive by increasing a number of substitutions per match to 5 instead of the usual 3 for the balance of the season. The nature of our business since the COVID-19 attack has been such that the board of governors is at hand to meet and address the challenges we face as they arise.

To date the Board of Governors has ordered the following:-

– The suspension of the League when the lockdown was announced and extended.

– An application to resume training and play

– Set the date to resume and the creation of Biologically Safe Environment for this to happen.”
