PSL STATS: Gameweek 29

Share

4 – Only four clubs still have a mathematical chance of becoming PSL top-flight champions – Chiefs, Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United.

3 – Only two spots remain available in next season’s Top 8. In addition to the current Top 4, Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United have also secured a Top 8 spot for next season.

5 – As of today, only five teams can still finish 15th (playoffs) or 16th (automatic relegation) – Chippa United, Baroka, AmaZulu, Black Leopards and Polokwane City.

Black Leopards v Bidvest Wits

Leopards have been the most impressive relegation-based team since the restart, and are 7th in the post-lockdown table. However, their form pre-lockdown, where they were 16th means they always had a lot of catching up to do. The bio-bubble form may not be enough, but a win against WIts tonight will save them from automatic relegation (at least).

9 – Wits are on a 9-game unbeaten run in the league, their longest run of league games without defeat since the 2017/18 season. If they avoid defeat tonight, they will equal the longest unbeaten run of any team this season.

Highlands Park v Cape Town City

Cape Town City have been the best team in the bio-bubble, and arguably one of the best teams of 2020. They have won the most games since the start of the year (8) and no team has scored more goals or collected more points than them. In addition, their 2,4 points per game since the restart is the best return of all teams. They can secure a fourth successive Top 8 finish tonight with a win against Highlands Park.

0 – Highlands Park are one of only four teams yet to lose a league game since the restart, and are also one of only four teams yet to win a league game since the restart (Played 4 Drew 4).

Kaizer Chiefs v Chippa

Chiefs host Chippa tonight looking to turn around the woeful bio-bubble form that threatens to derail their title campaign. Midderndorp’s men are one of only four teams that average less than a point a game since the restart, and desperately need the win to hold onto top position. Chiefs’ defence has been the main issue in the bubble, as they have leaked 9 goals – more than any other side.

5 – Since they last won the league in 2014/15, Chiefs have lost 5 league matches to Chippa, more than they have lost against any other opponent.

Golden Arrows v Celtic

Steve Komphela faces his former side hoping they can help turn their bio-bubble fortunes around. They have scored just one open play goal and won just one point since the restart, and their 0,2 points per game is the lowest in the division during that time. They face a side that they have always struggled to beat in the modern day PSL era.

3 – Arrows have won just 3 of the 29 league matches played against Celtic in the 30-game PSL era (Lost 14 Drew 12).

Maritzburg v Pirates

Two teams whose fortunes have regressed as the year progressed clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium tonight. Pirates representatives won both the January Coach & Player of the Month awards, and then Maritzburg won the Feb/March awards. But the two sides have won just one game between them since the restart. Indeed, the post-lockdown table places Maritzburg in 14th.

1 – Maritzburg have won just one of the last ten league games played against Pirates since 2015, losing three and drawing the other six.

Polokwane v Sundowns

What contrasts! Polokwane City need three points to get off the bottom of the table. Sundowns need the three points to stay at the top of the table. The need is more urgent for Polokwane City, who could be relegated by 8pm tonight if other results don’t go their way.

3 – Under Pitso Mosimane, Sundowns have lost only three of the 25 league matches against Limpopo-based sides – Polokwane City, Baroka and Black Leopards. All Pitso’s defeats against  a side from the north have come at the hands of Polokwane City.

Stellenbosch v AmaZulu

Stellenbosch could find themselves in the Top 8 tonight if they win, and Celtic v Highlands Park ends in a draw. They can also be in the Top 8 heading into the last day of the season if they win and Bloemfontein Celtic also win, provided one of those wins is by more than one goal.

6 – In the 30-game PSL era, only six newly promoted sides have ended up in the Top 8 in the first top-flight season immediately after promotion.

SuperSport v Baroka

Superspot are still in with a mathematical chance of winning the league, but a lot would have to happen for that to fall into place. Their Top8 spot is secure as well, so maybe reaching 50 points may be a worthy target.

7 – Only seven Supersport sides have reached 50+ points in a 30-game season. The last of these sides was in 2011/12.
