Baroka head coach Matsimela Thoka has opened up about the team’s misfortunes in the past three matches in which they conceded goals with seconds remaining.
Bakgaga who started the season like a house on fire and were on top of the table at some stage, but have now gone three matches without a win.
Their fifth position on the log could have been different if they held on to their 1-0 lead against Orlando Pirates this past weekend, as well as against Golden Arrows earlier this month. Both matches ended 1-1.
“You know I can’t say the boys have a problem but there has been an issue with concentration because we can’t only focus in the first minutes of the game,” Thoka tells FARPost.
“But I think it was a wake-up call and I am happy because such things happened so going forward our boys will understand what we mean when we say we must concentrate from the first until the last whistle.
“I am not satisfied obviously, because of the results since I was officially appointed. I can’t be happy but we move on, we still have a marathon to run and I can’t fault the boys. So we need to wake up and be strong more than we did when we started,” he said.
“I don’t believe there is a curse. It is only God who knows that, but for me I know that these things can happen but it doesn’t happen to us only. Just like the Golden Arrows match against TS Galaxy, they equalised in the dying minutes of the game so it happens everywhere, even in Europe,” added Matsimela, who was officially appointed last month after the club parted ways with Dylan Kerr.
The longest-serving member of the Baroka Technical team insists a top 8 finish is still a target for the current season.
“I have no doubt about that and I am still saying that. It is our mandate, the team must play its first top 8 competition in the PSL from next season. That one even the players know that. Why not Baroka? We are in the top league and we must compete for the top 8 then the next season let’s think about winning the championship. One step at a time,” he said
They will next host Chippa United, on Sunday, 6 December at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
