With four games to go before Tanzania’s Azam wrap up their League campaign, former SuperSport United forward Prince Dube has emerged as a favourite in the Golden Boot race.
The Zimbabwe international scored his 14th League goal of the season on Thursday night as Azam beat Biashara United 2-0 at the Complex in Dar es Salaam.
The Warriors star opened the scoring with 11 minutes on the clock before Mudathir Yahya added the second in the 54th minute.
A long clearance fell into his path and he spectacularly volleyed home with his weaker left foot to give the George Lwandamina-coached side the lead.
He becomes the first Azam player in seven years to score 13 goals in a single season after eclipsing Kipre Tchetche’s record set during the 2013/14 season.
The club’s all time record, however, is 19 goals scored by John Bocco in 2012. Interestingly, Bocco who is now at Simba SC sits on 10 goals while his teammate Meddie Kagere is on 11 goals.
Simba, who are in the Caf Champions League quarterfinal, still have nine League fixtures to play.
Dube, who missed more than two months of action through injury, has also provided six assists and an additional three goals in other competitions.
Thursday’s win saw third placed Azam move to 60 points, a point behind second placed Young Africans and table topping Simba.
In the last two seasons, Tanzania’s Golden Boot has been won by Kagere, a Rwandan national. The 34-year-old former Gor Mahia striker scored 22 goals last season having found the target 23 times in the 2018/19 term.
