Former SuperSport United striker Darren Smith and Ajax Cape Town defender Ayabulela Konqobe have put pen to paper on one-year contracts with Finnish 2nd-tier side Ekenäs IF.
The Finnish club released a statement announcing their 5 new signings which included the two South African stars.
The statement read as follows:
“Aya Ayabulela Kongqobe (hereafter only Aya) and Darren Smith, both from South Africa are ready for Ekenäs IF for the season. Both have a one-year contract. Aya and Smith both come from South Africa. Both are strong midfield players, Aya more game-laying.”
The club said Smith, who’s 23 and Konqobe, 24, have already participated in a training match on Saturday against EPS, where EIF won 3-1. The two South African players were happy and impressed, thus accepted the EIF’s offer.
Ekenäs IF will play their first cup competition match in the Finnish Cup against Gnistan on Saturday, with Smith and Konqobe expected to make their official debut for the club after their impressive display in the training match.
Smith plays as a centre forward or attacking midfielder. He is a former Santos and AmaZulu player and has made 6 appearances in the Absa Premiership, finding the back of the net once.
Konqobe has played over 15 games in South Africa’s top-flight football in the colours of AmaZulu and Chippa United.
