Not long ago South Africa celebrated the fact that three South African teenagers were going to be playing top tier football together in Sweden for the 2020/21 season after Tashreeq Matthews and Luke Le Roux signed long term deals with Varbergs Bois who are the Swedish Allsvansken new boys for the new season.
Varbergs Bois already had another South African teenager in Keanin Ayer who was very instrumental in their promotion last season so when the duo signed it meant three teenagers would be at the club.
On Monday night Ayer started Varberg’s Swedish cup tie with Hammarby while Le Roux and Matthews started from the bench and came on in the second half as they got humbled 5-1 by Hammarby.
The positive though will be the fact the two teenagers came on for the last 30 minutes of the encounter to make their official debuts.
Varbergs is a club that prides itself on signing and grooming youngsters which will be a big positive for the South Africans who hope to lay a solid foundation as they start their journeys in Europe.
For years South Africa has struggled with exporting footballers who go on to make a name for themselves overseas with the likes of Benni McCarthy, Quinton Fortune and Steven Pienaar being some of the names who went on to make it big and all three left at a very young age something the young teenagers will hope to emulate in their careers.
