South Africa’s Under-23 trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been cancelled.
The 25-man squad was scheduled to leave the county on Monday but a source close to this publication has confirmed that the team will no longer participate in a tournament in the UAE against Brazil, Korea, and Argentina.
“Unfortunately, the trip to the UAE is off, we are working on a camp to Egypt next week,” said a source inside the South African Football Association (Safa).
The reasons for the cancellation of the trip are currently unknown.
The tournament, which is scheduled to start from 5-11 June 2021 was meant to be part of the junior national team’s preparations for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics set to take centre stage from 22 July to 8 August 2021.
South Africa is in Group A together with hosts Japan who they play on 22 July at the Tokyo Stadium and France who they meet at Saitama Stadium on 25 July.
The other country is Mexico.
