SAD Belenenses have progressed to the next round of the Portuguese Cup after a narrow win against Fafe on Thursday evening.
The Primeira Liga outfit had to dig deep to eliminate third division side Fafe from the competition.
Fafe got off to a flying start as veteran striker Ferrihno opened the scoring 19 minutes into the first half of the game to give the hosts a surprise lead. Belenenses were caught napping just before the end of the first half and defender Danny Agostinho committed a foul inside the box to give the hosts a penalty.
Spanish striker Luis Neves made no mistake from the spot to give the lower division side a two-goal advantage going into the break. Coach Nuno Oliveira made four quick substitutions in the second half as he hoped to turn things around in the second half.
It took 88 minutes for the visitors to find their first goal and three minutes later, Miguel Cardoso’s additional time equaliser meant that the game had to go to extra time.
Francisco Teixera’s 119th minute strike ensured victory for the visitors who progressed to the quarter final stage in dramatic fashion.
Thibang Phete started and played 65 minutes for the Lisbon-based side while Sphephelo Sithole was rested after starting the previous 7 games in the league.
On Monday evening, Belenenses travel to Portimonense in match day 14 of the league. They will be looking to return to winning ways after a defeat to high-flying Pacos Ferreira at home.
The team is currently in 14th spot on the log with 12 points from 13 games, a win against the coastal side will see them ease their relegation concerns.
Phete will be pleased to be getting more game time after spending three weeks on the side-lines due to suspension. He lasted 55 minutes in the previous game as he continues his return to the squad.
He is one of a few players that the coach has shown faith in this season alongside Sithole who has established himself as the glue of the squad in midfield.
