The South African Football Association (Safa) have expressed shock at the tragic and sudden passing of former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Anele Ngcongca.
Ngcongca died in a horrific car accident in KwaZulu Natal in the early hours of Monday. He was reportedly on his way to join AmaZulu in Durban after agreeing terms with the club on Friday for a one-year loan move.
Jordaan said he was left shattered, numb and devastated after receiving news. “This 2020 has been a terrible year; economically, socially and we have lost many of our beloved ones. Anele’s death just sums up this dreadful year,” said the Safa President.
Over the years, road accidents have claimed the lives of many footballers and Jordaan says something has to be done to stop this sad trend.
‘’We have lost a number of our players through road accidents and I cannot explain enough the importance of adhering to speed limits and other driving regulations.
‘’Do not drink and drive. Do not speed beyond the allowed speed limit and take rest when tired,” emphasised Jordaan.
The Cape Town-born star had a successful career in Belgium where he won many trophies with Genk since joining the club in 2007.
In the colours of Sundowns, he won the Premiership title on three occasions, while he was also part of the squad that won the Caf Champions League in 2016. He was also Bafana Bafana’s No 1 right back for several years, earning over 50 caps.
