Mohamed Salah scored a crucial away goal as Liverpool lost 3-1 against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.
The Reds were humbled by the Spanish outfit in the first leg of the Uefa Champions League quarter-final played at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior scored a brace while Marco Asensio also registered his name on the score sheet.
Los Blancos dominated proceedings from the first whistle controlling the majority of the ball possession. Karim Benzema fired a warning shot in the early minutes of the first half before Vinicius gave the home side a well deserved lead after 27 minutes.
Toni Kroos played a beautiful diagonal pass from midfield which was controlled magnificently by the 20-year-old who smashed the ball past Allison Becker, 1-0.
Nine minutes later, Trent Alexander-Arnold committed a defensive mistake which led to Zinedine Zidane’s side doubling their advantage. The English defender attempted to head the ball back to his goalkeeper, but Asensio pounced on the loose ball before lobbying the ball past Allison to double the lead for the Spanish champions.
Jurgen Klopp’s side came out with more intent in the second half and they were rewarded when Salah scored from close range after some good work by Diogo Jota on the edge of the box. It was an open game with both sides looking to find the back of the net towards the hour mark.
Vinicius got his brace in the 65th minute after pouncing onto Luka Modric’s pass inside the box and put the ball beyond an out-stretched Alisson to make it 3-1 for Madrid.
The second leg will be played at Anfield Stadium on the 14th of April.
To have any chance of getting back into the tie, Liverpool need to score two goals without conceding against the Spanish giants. An away goal for Madrid would give them more comfort as the Reds would need to score four goals to progress.
Sadio Mane started and played the whole game while Naby Keita was substituted in the first half for Thiago Alcantara.
Elsewhere, Manchester City defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden. Marco Reus scored the crucial away goal for the German side who will go into the second leg with a lot of confidence after a good performance away from home.
Riyad Mahrez started and played the entire 90 minutes for the English side.
