Phillipe Sandler is back with Manchester City for pre-season.
Sandler is fighting to impress City boss Pep Guardiola who is believed to be a big admirer of the lanky defender. Guardiola signed the centre back from Dutch Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle in 2018.
He will be hoping that his injury problems are behind him as he returns from a pair of long-term injuries.
The 24-year-old has made just two appearances for Guardiola’s first team since joining the club. He came off the bench in a 7-0 FA Cup third round win over Rotherham United in January 2019 and played the full 90 minutes at centre-back in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final later that month.
In an attempt to give him more first team minutes, Sandler was sent out on loan to Vincent Kompany’s RSC Anderlecht, but made just nine appearances before suffering a knee injury that required surgery.
His comeback was hampered by an unrelated ankle injury, but Sandler returned to action for City’s academy side towards the end of last season and will now be looking to impress Guardiola in first team training ahead of the new campaign.
U23 coach Enzo Maresca was impressed by the defender who played in a 1-0 youth team win against Manchester united in April.
“He’s quite good now in terms of physicality and also the injury. He’s just getting some minutes with us and in the moment he’s ready he’ll be I think with the first team.”
