Serbian defender tips Hlongwane for Europe

Serbian defender Dušan Stević, who turned out for Maritzburg United last season, says his former teammate Bongokuhle Hlongwane has what it takes to play in Europe.

Stević, who joined the Team of Choice in February on an 18-month deal, is back in his native country after the club released him.

The former FK Napredak Kruševac [Serbian Super Liga side] defender waxed lyrical about the Bafana Bafana greenhorn, saying he had shown so much quality last season.

“Saniza, the young striker, is a very good player. He has a very bright future. I don’t see players with his quality at his age in my country. He is a strong guy, he runs fast and has a very good shot and can head.

“I remember his goal against Cape Town City which he scored with his left foot. His strongest foot is his right, but he scored with his left from 16 metres.

“I think he can make it in Europe, but he will have to work hard because it’s a different environment,” Stević told FARPost.

Stević, who shares an agent with Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic, said he was weighing his options after receiving three offers.

For now, he continues to train alone to keep fit while making up for lost time with his five-month old baby and his wife.

“I have a five-month old baby so I’m spending time with my family while training with my personal trainer,” he said.

He added that he had a beautiful experience in South Africa and was left in awe by the beauty of Durban.

“The experience was really nice, I never believed it was like this before I came. I thought it was easy, but everything about the League is perfect.

“The contract was terminated but I’m grateful to the coach and chairman who gave me the opportunity to play in South Africa. I’m also happy that the team stayed in the League,” he added.
