Al Jazira have been crowned as the 2020/21 Arabian Gulf League champions.
The Abu Dhabi-based club beat Khor Fakkan 3-1 to become the new kings of the Arabian football. The Spiders went into the game needing a victory with second-placed Baniyas trailing them by a single point going to the last round of games.
Baniyas drew 1-1 against visiting Al Wahda which ended their title aspirations.
Al Jazira finished the season with 57 points from 26 games while Baniyas only managed to reach a maximum of 54 points from the same number of games.
South African midfielder Thulani Serero was handed another start and he played 88 minutes to help Al Jazira clinch their third league title since being established in 1974.
Serero played 24 league games and provided three assists this season. Since his arrival at the club, Coach Marcel Keizer has been playing the former Ajax Cape Town star in the defensive midfield role.
This is the 31-year-old’s fourth league title since leaving Ajax Cape Town in 2011. He won three back-to-back titles with Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam between 2011 and 2014.
He has played 41 league games since signing for the club from Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem in 2019. Earlier this year, the midfielder signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium until 2023.
