UEFA have confirmed the names of the shortlisted nominees for the 2019/20 UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year Awards as well as the Women’s and Men’s Coach of the Year.
The winners of the accolades will be announced during the 2020/21 Champions League group stage draw ceremony on Thursday, 1 October.
Coaches will be honoured for the first time with UEFA introducing new awards for tacticians who have had the biggest impact in the previous campaign.
In a statement released on Wednesday, UEFA said the shortlist of players and coaches were selected by a jury composed of coaches of the clubs which participated in the group stages of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, together with journalists, selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group.
“The coaches and journalists were requested to select a shortlist of three players by allocating respectively five points, three points and one point to each of them. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by the coaches and the journalists. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own team.”
Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium – Manchester City), Robert Lewandowski (Poland – FC Bayern München) and Manuel Neuer (Germany – FC Bayern München) are the three nominees who received the most points.
For the Women’s Player of the Year, the shortlisted nominees are Lucy Bronze (England – Olympique Lyonnais, now at Manchester City Women), Pernille Harder (Denmark – VfL Wolfsburg, now at Chelsea FC Women) and Wendie Renard (France – Olympique Lyonnais).
In the Men’s Coach of the Year category, Hans-Dieter Flick (Germany – FC Bayern) will be up against Jürgen Klopp (Germany – Liverpool FC) and Julian Nagelsmann(Germany – RB Leipzig).
The Women’s Coach of the Year awards nominees who got the most overall points are Lluís Cortes (Spain – FC Barcelona), Stephan Lerch (Germany – VfL Wolfsburg) and Jean-Luc Vasseur (France – Olympique Lyonnais).
“The coaches were not allowed to vote for themselves and the UEFA Player of the Year Awards complement the positional awards, which will crown the best men’s and women’s Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Forward of the 2019/20 club competition season.”
