The emergence of performance analysis in the professional game has long been accepted but its proliferation and complete transformation in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), has somewhat been slow, tedious and laborious.
Few teams like Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and University of Pretoria, have defied the odds and persisted in hiring performance analysts within their institutions.
The FARPost Technical Study Group (TSG) looks at the highly talented Sinesipho Mali, the Chiefs and South Africa U23 Performance Analyst.
1. Who is Sinesipho Mali
Mali hails from a remote village called Ngxwalane, King Williams town in the Eastern Cape, and started his analysis journey as a Youth Coach in the lower ranks and later joined Mthatha City as a reliable second in command to Nkululeko Malgas in the provincial ABC Motsepe League
His analysis appetite took him to Chippa United (2 spells), odd consulting gigs with professional clubs, and ultimately joining the ‘Amakhosi’ analysis department.
He was part of the Under-23 Technical team that won bronze at the 2019 Cosafa Cup and also booked their ticket to the postponed 2020 Japan Olympics.
2. Meticulous analysis
The analysis reports of Mali reveals artistry, detail, substance, creativity and a deep understanding of the game from a man who’s just 26 years old (born 25th April 1993).

You have to admire the young man’s appetite for education, as Mali continues to transcend borders and stereotypes to achieve the best football education available.
He recently attended an Elite Performance Analysis Seminar in Manchester, England were he acquired advanced knowledge and application in modern practical analysis and strategic application in the English Premier League (EPL) and across Europe.
3. Future scouting ‘guru’
In essence, Mali is a tactical scouting expert with a solid background in Tactical Periodisation and classified scouting models, and this allows him the necessary space and opportunity to learn the scouting trade to the fullest.
His bright mind, learning zeal and the environment that he finds himself at Chiefs will allow his true talent to be cultivated by an institution with remarkable experience and a sound knowledge of the football scouting business that spans over 50 years.
