Bafana Bafana winger Luther Singh has continued his good start to 2021 in Portugal.
The Stars of Africa graduate maintained his record of playing in all 16 league games for Pacos Ferreira this season. He played 60 minutes and laid an assist for the first goal as Ferreira won 2-1 away from home.
Ferreira is the surprise package of the 2020/21 campaign with a dynamic young squad that has been playing entertaining, attacking football. Singh has scored two goals and assisted another two strikes so far.
The visitors took control of the game from the first whistle and it came as no surprise when they took the lead in the 16th minute with Singh battling for the ball on the left wing before finding an unmarked Joao Amaral who made no mistake from close range to give Ferreira the lead.
Ten minutes before the break, Luiz Carlos doubled the lead for the visitors after a beautiful delivery from the corner by Pedro Rebocho. Vicente managed to pull one back late in the second half, but it was too late as their opponents took all three points.
The result keeps Pedro Filipe’s side in 5th spot on the log with 31 points from 16 games. Their next game is against struggling Tondela on Friday evening – a win would see them leapfrog Benfica and Braga to third place.
Sporting Lisbon has turned the corner this season and currently sit on top of the table with 42 points from 16 games. FC Porto and SL Benfica have been dominating the Portuguese top flight for the past 10 years, but Lisbon has been rejuvenated by their academy graduates who have turned the club’s fortunes.
Singh is one of two players who has played all league games in the team this season – the other being striker Douglas Tanque who had scored 15 goals this season.
