Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler has explained Siyanda Xulu’s absence in recent matches.
Xulu, who is yet to renew his contract with the Team of Choice, was yet again left on the bench on Saturday night when they beat Polokwane City 1-0 at Harry Gwala Stadium.
“It’s for tactical reasons. Firstly, you need to look at the combination of Rushine (De Reuck) and Nazeer (Allie) – that combination has been exceptional so far this season,” Tinkler explained.
“I then grabbed Dan Morgan who was signed as a left wing back, played him as a centre back. He was absolutely outstanding. What type of a coach would I be if I take him out? He has shown me that he can do the job and has done it extremely well. So he kept his place. There is nothing against Siyanda and I have explained this to the players at the beginning of the season. You play well, you perform well, you keep your position.”
Meanwhile, Tinkler conceded that they would have a say on which team wins the Absa Premiership. The Team of Choice still has to face title chasers Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits.
“I think we will (have a say), to be brutally honest. I don’t think it’s over as yet. Yes, we are playing those teams but Chiefs also has to play them. So I think we possibly could benefit Chiefs or it could be to the detriment of Chiefs.
“It’s still gonna be a tough task for Chiefs. They gonna make sure that they keep on winning. The games that we have at home, Sundowns, Pirates, Wits. We wanna collect the 3 points. We are not here to do favours to anyone,” said Tinkler.
