Famalicao got knocked out of the Portuguese League Cup by SL Bentica on Wednesday evening.

Leandra Smeda got her first minutes in cup football, but it was not an ideal night as Famalicao got subdued by the Portuguese giants.

The South African anchor was introduced in the second half of the encounter as they bowed out in the semi-final stage of the competition.

Nigeria’s Christy Ucheibe was named in Benfica’s starting line up and played the entire 90 minutes. She received a yellow card after 42 minutes as she was having a tough battle in midfield.

Since moving to Benfica, the Nigerian has become a key member of the squad and already won them some silverware while playing a big role in their dominance in the league.

It took just two minutes for the visitors to open the scoring with Ana Vitoria Araujo finding the back of the net from close range. Both teams tried to score before the end of the first half, but Benfica went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

After a dominant spell in the second half, the visitors doubled the lead through a Cloe Lacasse 61st minute strike. With 20 minutes remaining in the game, Lacasse completed her brace and secured a spot in the final for the Lisbon-based side as they marched on to the final of the competition.

Benfica will face familiar foes in the final of the competition as they have to wait to find out who they will face between their home town rivals Sporting Lisbon and SC Braga who recently defeated them in the final of the Portuguese Cup.

To reach the semi-finals, Famalicao defeated Torreense 2-0 in the quarter-final While their opponents Benfica went through by eliminating Albergaria.

Famalicao will now shift focus to the Campeonato Nacional Feminino Championship Play-offs where they will hope to continue their form from last weekend. Smeda got her first 90 minutes in the league as the Portuguese outfit defeated Maritimo 3-1.
