Safa’s head of competition Thomas Sadiki has confirmed that the Safa National Women’s League (SNWL) trophy which is yet to be revealed to the public will be handed to the champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies on the last weekend of the season.
When approached by FARPost Sadiki was reluctant to disclose the prize money or confirm if there is any prize money at all for the league winners.
However, Sadiki said that the trophy of the inaugural SNWL will be handed over to Sundowns Ladies after their last game of the league on March 29 against rivals Tshwane University of Technology (TUT Ladies) at the TUT Main Stadium.
“Sundowns Ladies haven’t won the league, no, their last match is on the 29th of March, you cannot say they have won the league because we can only give them whatever trophy on the 29th,” said Sadiki.
In fact, Sundowns Ladies won the league [with two games to spare] almost a week ago after they hammered Coal City Wizards 4-1.
“We updated them [teams on the winner’s prize money], even today we had a meeting,” added Sadiki.
“No, I cannot tell you [the prize money] because we spoke with them [teams] to say we are finalising their issues because it is not all about the prize for number one you know,” concluded SAFA’s head of competition.
Meanwhile, SAFA’s vice-president Ria Ledwaba when asked for a comment said, “No no no, I am a politician…I am a vice-president of SAFA that only go to political meetings which is four times a year and we talk politics.
“In terms of the administration of the league I won’t be able to give you the answers that you want because I am not at SAFA house on a daily basis,” added Ledwaba.
