Ajax Cape Town interim coach Calvin Marlin says they would have wanted to win their Nedbank Cup last 32 match against TS Sporting, but admits that cup games can be a distraction.
Ajax were defeated 4-3 on penalties by Sporting following a 2-2 draw in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 match at Athlone Stadium on Thursday night.
The Urban Warriors are currently 3 points clear at the top of the GladAfrica Championship log with 10 matches remaining.
“A couple of our players had flu so we would have made a lot more changes but yes I mean obviously with us on top of the log a distraction like a cup game is a distraction but you want to win every game. Winning breeds more winning and the confident stays with the team so you don’t want to lose any games,” Marlin told the media after the match.
“We came here to win the game but we also did make a few changes to see if a few guys can fit into the formation and how we play so it was a chance for one or two players to stand up and challenge for a position,” he said.
Ajax will now shift their focus to their promotion ambitions as they face Real Kings at home on Saturday, February 15.
