The stark reality of relegation is now staring Jomo Cosmos square in the face with only two GladAfrica Championship matches remaining.
Club owner and head coach, Jomo Sono feels their chances of a miraculous relegation escape depend on how they play in their penultimate game against Steenberg United on Wednesday.
On Saturday, Cosmos claimed a key win to boost their GladAfrica survival hopes when they defeated Free State Stars 2-1 at the Wits Rugby Stadium.
“We needed a victory badly, is good we are moving slowly up… the team that played [against Stars] just wanted to work and work for the badge,” said Sono.
In the 2018/19 National First Division (NFD) campaign, ‘Ezenkosi’ managed to survive the drop zone by one point, concluding the season in 13th place and Sono is hopeful that his side can avoid the axe to the ABC Motsepe League once again.
“Us and the teams on top came for a reason to the PSL Bio Bubble, the rest in the middle it is okay, for us it is a cup final because we want to stay in the GladAfrica Championship,” added Sono.
Sono’s men are second from bottom, level on points with 13th and 14th placed Mbombela United and TS Sporting, who have a better goal difference.
“We are going to start planning around Steenberg United today [Saturday], they are a very difficult team. They run as well, I would say the next two games is a do or die for us,” concluded Sono.
Cosmos will end their season against AmaTuks on Sunday.
