South African Sport Psychologist Koketjo Tsebe has shared some tips for professional footballers to keep their minds at ease during this unusual period.
Football just like any other major sports has been temporarily suspended due to the serial COVID-19 pandemic that has killed over 37 000 around the world.
Studies have proved that such forced breaks can affect athletes mentally but Tsebe who also works with the SA Softball national team has some advice for local soccer players.
“Experiences of frustrations and worry are a normal reaction to the current situation. So do acknowledge your feelings during this period. The drastic changes due to the corona pandemic means athletes have to change their normal way of living,” she told FARPost.
“It is important to establish a balanced routine that is made up of healthy activities. The activities may be exercising, eating healthy, resting and keeping mentally fit.
“In other cases a life of an athlete is hectic thus allowing minimal time to spend with family. This can be perceived as an opportunity to spend quality time with family,” she added.
Tsebe’s basic Tips for Soccer players:
– Limit media intake
-Maintain a high level of self motivation
-Take care of your mental and physical body
-Acknowledge your feelings
-Relax as much as you can
