STATS: Bucs v Downs

The clash of the week sees Mamelodi Sundowns visit Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night at Orlando Stadium (19:30).

In light of the brewing title race, many Kaizer Chiefs fans are hoping Pirates can do them a favour and beat Sundowns.

Log leaders Chiefs are 9 points ahead of second-placed Sundowns in the race for the coveted Absa Premiership title.

Pirates, however, will be hoping a win helps their own cause, and bring some hoodoos to an end.

Since Pitso Mosimane joined Sundowns in December 2012, The Brazilians have never lost a league match away to Pirates.

Sundowns have dominated Pirates in their own backyard over most of the last decade and Pirates have always found the going tough against Masandawana since 1996. If past records are anything to go by, the match may not be as close as most fans anticipate.

0 – Pirates have won none of their last eight games at home to Sundowns in the league since 2011/12 (Lost 5, Drew 3), failing to score on 5 of the 8 occasions. A win could bring that streak to an end.

19 – Sundowns have beaten Orlando Pirates 19 times since 1996, the highest number of defeats the Buccaneers have suffered against a single opponent in the PSL.

0 – Pirates are yet to win back-to-back league games in the league this season, and will be looking to do that for the first time against Sundowns.

WITS vs CELTIC

Wits, who were also involved in continental action over the weekend, host Celtic on Wednesday night.

The Students may be seen to be quietly building their own title charge, shown in the recent 1-1 draw against Sundowns, with 10-men.

They are yet to play league leaders Chiefs in the league this season, and victory in any of those matches (scheduled for March and April) could make the title race even more interesting. Since losing 1-0 to Supersport at the start of November (through a 90th minute goal), Wits have remained unbeaten in the league, and are the only PSL team that has not lost a game in that period.

In fact, their 27 points from 13 league games so far is their second best total for them in a 30-game PSL season (29 in 2015/16).

30 – A win for Wits would give them 30 points from 14 league games, which would be their best ever start after 14 games of a 30-game PSL season.

16 – Wits have won 16 times against Celtic in the PSL era. Golden Arrows (20) are the only side currently in the league that they have beaten on more occasions.

Yet, The Clever Boys must be wary:

42 – Celtic have scored 42 goals against Wits in the PSL era. Against no other team have Siwelele scored more league goals (42 also against Ajax & Arrows).
