Not since 2007/08 have Kaizer Chiefs failed to win less than three of their first ten games of a league season.
This weekend, they could claim another unwanted piece of history, should they fail to beat Maritzburg. Yet, facing the side they eliminated in the MTN8 quarter finals could be the catalyst for a turnaround in fortunes.
0 – Chiefs are the only side yet to win a home league game this season (D3 L1), with their only home win coming in the MTN8 (v Maritzburg).
Already, Chiefs are enduring their worst start to a league season. At the same stage last season, they were setting all sorts of records. They won 25 points in their opening 10 league games, the second-best start to a 30-game campaign by any PSL side. But this season, they are setting unfavorable records.
7 – Seven points from the opening eight league games is Kaizer Chiefs’ worst start at this stage of a league season in PSL history.
The man in charge of the team last season has since moved from Chiefs to Maritzburg, via East Africa. Dismissed after narrowly losing out on the 2019/20 title, Ernst Middendorp would find pleasure in victory today, especially given that it would mean Maritzburg leapfrog Chiefs on the table. However, his record against Chiefs is not one to be proud of.
1 – Middendorp has won just one of the 10 matches he has overseen as a Maritzburg coach against Chiefs (D3 L6).
It’s not just Middenndorp who has struggled against Chiefs. As a club, Maritzburg have had a hard time solving the Chiefs puzzle over the years. Despite famously knocking Amakhosi out of the 2019 Telkom Knockout Cup at the semi-final stage, Chiefs have lost just one of the last ten league games against Maritzburg (D3 L6).
6 – In fact, since the title win in 2014/15, Chiefs have won more league matches against Maritzburg than against any other side (6).
Chiefs will be more optimistic after making it through to the Champions League group stages this week. A clean sheet across two legs (including a bruising experience in Angola) means they have only conceded one goal in 270 minutes of action in all competitions. That could be something to build on for Gavin Hunt, who has had a turbulent start at the club. If there was a club he would have chosen to face in order to help him get out of the rut, it would be Maritzburg.
18 – Since 2006, Gavin Hunt has won 18 matches against Maritzburg (D9 L3, all competitions), more than he has against any other club.
Golden Arrows v Chippa
8 – Golden Arrows are one of only three sides yet to lose a league game this season. The longest they have gone without losing at the start of a season is 10 games (2017/18 and 2008/09).
TS Galaxy v SuperSport
1 – SuperSport have won just one out of the last nine matches played against newly-promoted sides, drawing two, losing six, and keeping only one clean sheet in those games.
Baroka v Mamelodi Sundowns
1 – Sundowns have only won once in the last five matches against Baroka in all competitions, scoring two goals (including one penalty) in those games. Even that one win came against 10 men.
TTM v Cape Town City
13 – Cape Town City have won two away games already this season, equalling their total from all of last season.
