49 – This will be the 49th league fixture between the two sides. No fixture has been played on more occasions in the PSL era (including a few others involving these two sides, SuperSport and Sundowns).
Pirates have won successive league games only once this season (v Celtic & SuperSport in November). While their home form has often been their saving grace, even that has suffered of late, and they are currently on a run of three successive draws at home, scoring just two goals in those.
4 – In the PSL era, Pirates have never drawn four matches in a row at home.
Earlier in the season, they were notorious for coming back from behind, winning five points in three successive games where the opposition scored first.
Now, things have changed. Pirates have dropped eight points in league matches where they opened the scoring this season (Drew 4), more than they did throughout all of last season (Drew 3). It’s something that they need to change.
Are Chiefs back?
Chiefs will have the 5-0 MTN8 thrashing at the back of their minds when they travel to Pirates. But they also know that they are the last team to win an away game versus Pirates in the league. That should give them some confidence.
1 – Chiefs are the only side that has beaten Josef Zinnbauer in a home game since he started his coaching stint at Pirates.
The only other team that has succeeded in the new era at Pirates was Gavin Hunt’s Wits in a Cup game. They progressed in the Nedbank Cup on penalties after drawing their Nedbank Cup thriller in February 2020.
Yet, thanks to the MTN humbling, Hunt’s record against Pirates of late can be filed under: Mixed. Before joining Chiefs, Hunt had lost two out of thirteen games against Pirates, including a run of seven successive wins between 2015 and 2017.
Now, he has lost four of the last eight against Pirates. However, he will know that Pirates seem to have stagnated after they went on to lift the MTN8 trophy.
12 – The Buccaneers have won as many points as Chiefs since the MTN8 Cup final victory (12).
Chiefs have actually scored more goals than Pirates in the same time period. Chiefs, themselves, are on a 5-game unbeaten run in the league, their longest such run since they went 9-unbeaten in that dreamy period between October and December 2019.
Yet, this fixture is notorious for draws.
24 – The Pirates-Chiefs league fixture has ended in a draw on 24 occasions in the PSL era, more than any other fixture.
SuperSport v Swallows
12 – SuperSport are unbeaten at home in 12 league matches (W8 D4 since January 2020), a new club record for the longest unbeaten home run in the league.
Black Leopards v TS Galaxy
9 – Leopards have lost nine points from winning positions in the league this season, more than any other side.
Bloemfontein Celtic v TTM
1 – Celtic have lost just one of the 14 league games they have played at home since the start of last year (D6 L7).
Golden Arrows v Maritzburg United
0 – Arrows have not lost a home game to Maritzburg since 2012, winning five and drawing two of their home meetings in all competitions since then, by an aggregate score of 10-3.
