STATS: Sundowns v Celtic & Chiefs v TTM

The chance to gain ground on other teams is there for the taking for Gavin Hunt and his men, when they host 15th placed Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila this afternoon.

Only two weeks ago, Chiefs were the laughing stock of all and sundry, stuck just outside the relegation zone in 14th place. A week later, they are in the Top 8, with the added incentive of knowing that a win will send them one point behind perennial rivals Orlando Pirates.

3 – Chiefs will be looking for a 3rd successive win in the league, something they last managed in September-December 2019 (8 in a row). They never won three successive games at any point throughout 2020 (Played 24).

With near rivals like Pirates and Cape Town City stuttering (both have won one in four), Chiefs could be the big winners in January, which also happens to be their favorite month.

56% – In the PSL era, Chiefs have won 56% of league games played in the month of January, their best win rate for a particular month of the year (minimum 2 games played).

This could be a telling week for TTM, who have to face both in-form Chiefs and SuperSport in the next few days. After purchasing Wits’ status last year, TTM have found the going tough in the top-flight, winning just one of their opening 11 games this season (a last minute win against Baroka).

Failure to win against Chiefs could spell even more trouble for them: 6 – In the 30-game era, none of the six sides that had won just one out of 12 games in their first top-flight season finished higher than 15th (5 finished 16th, one finished 15th).

Sundowns v Bloemfontein Celtic

Defending champions and league leaders Sundowns host struggling Bloemfontein Celtic this afternoon.

Masandawana will be looking to create some breathing space between themselves and Swallows FC, who they host this coming Saturday in a top-of-the-table clash.

Since the 2010 World Cup, Celtic have won 3 games away to Sundowns with only Pirates and Chiefs (5 each) winning more in that time. Yet, the two teams come into the match in contrasting form:

8 – Sundowns have kept 8 clean sheets in their opening 11 league games, their joint-most at this stage of a PSL season (8 also in 2006/7).

5 – Bloem Celtic are winless in 5 league games (D3 L2), their longest run without a league win since a seven-game winless run between February and April 2019.
