Stellenbosch FC have announced the signing of former Bidvest Wits winger Solly Khunyedi ahead of the 2020/21 season.
Young and skilful, Khunyedi becomes the second signing for Stellenbosch from the now-defunct Wits‚ whose Premiership franchise was sold to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) at the end of the 2019/20 season.
The former South Africa U20 international was promoted to the Wits first team by coach Gavin Hunt last season after enjoying a good run in the club’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge team (MDC).
Khunyedi, 20, played 10 matches for the ‘Clever Boys’ in the previous campaign, five in the league, four in the CAF Confederation Cup and got a run in the Nedbank Cup.
Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Macheke had already moved to ‘Stellies’ from Wits in the current off-season transfer window with Sage Stephens being the club’s third signing, from Cape Town City.
The Western Cape outfit said in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon: “Pen to paper and it’s a done deal. It is with great pleasure that the club welcomes its latest acquisition in the successful signing of Solly Khunyedi. Welcome to the ‘Stellies’ family Solly.”
Meanwhile, ‘Stellies’ rivals, Cape Town City confirmed the permanent signing of Fagrie Lakay on a three-year contract as the player’s contract had expired at Wits last season. The club also secured striker Tashreeq Morris on a two-year deal extension.
