Mamelodi Sundowns have spurned a chance to close the gap on Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership league log, after playing out to a 1-1 draw with Highlands Park at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Friday night.
‘The Lions of the North’ took the lead through a superb finish from Peter Shalulile in the sixth minute of the match before a Sphelele Mkhulise goal late in the first half pulled Sundowns level.
The result leaves championship hopeful Sundowns three points behind leaders Chiefs while Highlands move up to seventh place on the log standings with 32 points after 25 matches.
Mkhulise walked away with the Man of the Match award.
“Coming here we wanted to win the game but we will take the point, I think we worked very hard, we will take the point and move forward,” said Mkhulise after the game.
“As you know [Gaston] Sirino is a very important player for us, so the moment I saw him with the ball I made that run as I knew he was going to pass me, so I think it was a beautiful goal, I would like to thank him as well for the assist,” concluded Mkhulise.
