The inaugural Caf Women’s Champions League Cosafa qualifiers will start on Thursday in Durban and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies head into the tournament in great form – sitting comfortably at the summit of the Hollywoodbets Super League table.
The Super League reigning champions, Sundowns Ladies touched down in Durban on Monday as favourites to clinch the Southern African region coveted trophy and also seal their place in the Caf Champions League tournament in Egypt later this year.
‘Banyana Ba’Style’ are the seeded team in Group A and will tackle Lesotho’s Defence Force, Double Action Ladies from Botswana, and Eswatini’s Manzini Wanderers. Meanwhile, Group B consists of Tura Magic (Namibia), Green Buffaloes (Zambia), and Black Rhino Queens of Zimbabwe.
The top two teams in each group will seal a spot in the semifinals, with the final set to be played on September 4.
“We have been looking forward to competing and represent South Africa, so everyone is just excited. The girls can’t wait to play,” said Sundowns Ladies captain Zanele Nhlapo.
“The mood, I would say everyone is happy, everyone seems ready for the upcoming games and we are ready for the tournament,” added the vice-captain Karabo Makhurubetshi.
“It was an amazing experience [traveling to KwaZulu-Natal], we felt important and welcomed with the police everywhere on guard.”
All matches will be live on the SABC Sport Channel on Openview and the final will be broadcast live on SABC 1. The encounters will also be streamed live on Cosafa TV.
