Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies midfielder Chuene Morifi hopes that the announcement of Hollywoodbets as the new headline sponsor of the Women’s National League will raise the profile of women’s football in South Africa.
This comes after the South African Football Association (Safa) revealed the news of the new official sponsor for the women’s league prior to Sundowns Ladies and TUT Ladies League clash on Sunday afternoon. The game ended 4-1 in favour of Sundowns.
Morifi became the first female footballer to receive the Hollywoodbets Super League Player of the Match accolade on the day.
“We have been praying to get a sponsor to come in and assist. It’s a great opportunity for us to become professional players and we are really grateful to Hollywodbets to recognise us because it has been a long time coming,” said Morifi in a post-match interview with SABC Sport.
“I’m very happy personally to be the first player to walk away with the Player of the Match award.”
She believes this partnership will inspire a new generation of women to get into sport and live their dream.
The 30-year-old Banyana Banyana player was also on the scoresheet in the Tshwane derby. She sent a message of gratitude to the club’s technical team for guiding and believing in her.
“The coach has been telling me that I need to start taking responsibility because what I think of all the time is creating chances for others to get the job done in the final third,” she says in conclusion.
