South Africa’s representatives in CAF competitions Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates were off to good starts on Tuesday, both picking crucial away wins.
Sundowns were in Botswana where they beat champions Jwaneng Galaxy 2-0 courtesy of goals by Mothobi Mvala and Peter Shalulile on either side of the half in a Caf Champions League first round first leg tie.
Pirates, on the other hand, secured a 1-0 victory over Angola’s Sagrada Esperanca in the Caf Confederation Cup first round first-leg match at Estadio Municipal dos Coqueiros on Tuesday afternoon.
Thembinkosi Lorch was the hero for the Buccaneers as he grabbed a late goal which earned the team a hard-fought victory over the Diamonds in Angola’s capital city, Luanda.
Sundowns host Galaxy for the return leg on January 6, the same day Pirates welcome Esperanca. The aggregate winners of both ties proceed to the group stages of the tournament.
