Mamelodi Sundowns players were given 3 days off to rest after beating their rivals SuperSport United 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup last 32 clash on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Team doctor Dr Carl Kgabo Tabane told FARPost that they usually give the players these breaks so that they can rest due to the tight schedule that Sundowns have throughout the season.
Dr Tabane said the 3 days is for the players to regain their fitness and also help them recover and regenerate.
“We played SuperSport United on Saturday and we gave the players 3 off days from Sunday to Tuesday. We only started training again yesterday (Wednesday),” said Dr Tabane.
“We do this after looking at our tight schedule that we normally have and once we can get a week like this where we play only once in a week, we make sure the players refresh by resting. You know this was just one of the few weeks where we play on a Saturday and play against the next Saturday.
“It has scientifically been proven that it’s good for the players to get enough rest between games and training when we train once a day,” said Dr Tabane.
He added that they also looked at their next tight schedule to ensure the players rest.
“Look from this Saturday we are playing Chippa United then on Wednesday we face Bloemfontein Celtic and after that we play VUT (Vaal University of Technology) in the Nedbank Cup and then travel to take on Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League.
“So, you see there will be very little time to recover, regenerate and rest. We need every little time we find to give the players the needed rest,” concluded Dr Tabane.
